The Feedbag brings news that John McDonald is now moving his airy, undertrafficked eatery Chinatown Brasserie into the basement and turning it over to Serge Becker. It’s a move that’s unexpected (Becker recently told BlackBook he was taking a break from empire building) but rather genius. Becker has a way with basements (he’s the man behind La Esquina), and he’s also familiar with this particular space (having been a partner in its previous occupant, Fez) and the neighborhood, since he’s also a partner in B Bar and Joe’s Pub. While Chinatown Brasserie lives on in the basement, a new restaurant, run by Josh Capon and Robert Collins of Lure, will serve what chef Capon describes as “American food, like Lure, but without the focus on seafood.” The as-yet-unnamed restaurant will open in December.
