Smokeasies Are Being Smoked Out by the Authorities

Apparently not satisfied that, per a study cited in the Daily News, “life expectancy for babies born [in New York City] in 2007 grew to 79.4 years — an improvement of nearly five months over 2006,” the city has been cracking down even harder on clubs that violate the smoking ban. According to Steve Lewis’s sources, the almost nightly visits to certain establishments are due to a recent exposé in the New York Times, which isn’t surprising considering the crackdown that occurred after a similar piece in the Post was published pretty much exactly a year ago. The question is, when this enforcement is combined with the SLA’s renewed determination to target problem establishments, will smokeasies be subject to more discipline from the Authority?
