Hearty shtetl cuisine isn’t exactly the first thing to spring to mind when we think of warm-weather food, but Chozen ice cream, which blends vanilla ice cream with classic Jewish desserts, is trying to change that. The brand (pronounced “chosen,” as in the people) was started by Manhattanite Ronne Fisher and her daughters, who pull ingredients from local dairies and use “authentic Brooklyn bakers” for their raisiny rugelach. Three flavors — coconut macaroon, rugelach, and a toffee-esque matzoh crunch — are available now at Garden of Eden and Union Market for about $5 a pint. Look for a chocolate-babka variety and a Rosh Hashanah–appropriate apples-and-honey version on track to hit stores just in time for yontif.
