Union Square Loses Its No-Frills Dive, Bar 119

A few months ago, Galaxy Global Eatery closed; now its sister bar, Union Square’s one and only rock-and-roll dive, 119 Bar (a.k.a. Bar 119, a.k.a. “that place with the really loud music and all the flies in the bathrooms”), has bit the dust, per a recent Yelp review that says they lost their lease. A look at the bar’s Facebook page confirms it: “bar119 is closing feb 28 for good, so make sure you come say goodbye to one of NYC’s landmarks and best dive bar! It’s a sad day for me and many other people.”

Another update reads, “Union square is dead, as it was the last cool spot there,” and informs that the weekly drag bingo night has moved to La Flaca. Union Square types looking to get sloppy with their co-workers will now have to venture into the East Village, and the pre– and post–Irving Plaza crowd is advised to relocate to Black and White.
