Diner’s Journal says Alex Stupak’s new East Village Empellón location, which will take over the space previously occupied by Counter, will be called Empellón Cocina and is scheduled to open in “late fall.”

But taco lovers will want to stick with the West Village branch: Stupak tells DJ that the new spot “will not have tacos or chips,” but will instead offer menus “focused on Mexican cooking from different regions.” Also! It sounds like he’s going to go back to some of the fancier stuff he was doing at wd~50 and, before that, Alinea: “I’m still a pastry chef at heart, so presentation will also be important.”
