Beleagured East Village holdout Mars Bar might’ve had another few weeks to live, but yesterday the bar was shuttered by the Department of Health. The DOH found “hundreds of fruit flies,” standing water, cracked walls, and further unsanitary conditions (ya think?), reports DNA Info. EV Grieve broke the news yesterday that the bar seemed to be closed, and when DNA Info called the saloon last night, an employee confirmed that it would not reopen before the building is demolished to make way for a housing complex. R.I.P. to one of the last vestiges of the old Lower East Side. [DNA Info, EV Grieve, Earlier]
